NORFOLK, Va. – The FDU Knights (18-27, 13-13) closed their three-game series at Norfolk State (11-35, 6-21) with a 10-4 victory over the Spartans.
Norfolk native, graduate student,
Zac Capps started the day on the mound for FDU where he completed seven successful innings of work. Capps put away seven batters through strikeout and only allowed two runs without issuing any walks.
The Spartans got on the board first with a lead-off solo homerun to open the game with a 1-0 lead.
The Knights, however, found an answer in the third inning where they scored three runs.
Jeremy Cheeseman doubled down the right field line to score
TJ Werner to give the Knights their first run of the day.
Brian Sanders who was occupying third base, made his way home off a wild pitch and
Hunter D'Amato singled to second base to score Cheeseman for the final FDU run of the inning.
Norfolk tacked on another run with another solo homerun in the third inning.
FDU put up another three spot in the fifth frame of the game with a fielding error that scored Sanders to start up the runs. With
Justin Sierra on third base, a
Nick Quagliato single did the damage to drive in that second run of the inning.
Nate Dudeck capped off the fifth inning scoring with a double down the left field line to score
Joey DiMotta to give the Knights a 6-2 lead.
The Knights followed it up in the eighth inning with four more runs. With an error on the Norfolk shortstop, Cheeseman who was on third made his way home.
Joey DiMotta singled to right field driving in Sierra to score. With Quagliato and DiMotta on the base-paths, Dudeck cranked a single to right-center field to clear the bases to extend the Knights lead to 10-2.
Norfolk scored two more runs in the eighth inning off a two-run homerun but could not make up the rest of the deficit. Ultimately the Knights closed the game with a 10-4 victory.
We saw
Brian Yadlon and
Ian Barrett make relief appearances pitching the final two innings. The duo combined for five strikeouts.
The Knights managed to pick up 15 hits and six walks in today's game. Six Knights picked up a multi-hit game with
Brian Sanders and
Nate Dudeck leading the charge with three hits with each. Cheeseman,
Hunter D'Amato, DiMotta and Quagliato all recorded two hits apiece. Sierra tacked on one hit as well.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, May 7 to face St. John's on the road. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
