Joel Roman (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10
th inning to give the Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team a walk-off victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.
The Knights (19-21, 9-10 NEC) connected on four home runs, including two by senior
John Giakas (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), as they edged the Pioneers (21-15, 12-3 NEC) by a score of 7-5 in extra innings.
FDU scored first with Giakas blasting a two-run home run to left field in the top of the first inning. After the Pioneers tied the game at 2-2 with a home run in the top of the second, the Knights went back in front on a solo homer by senior
Dylan Sprague (Brunswick, N.Y./Averill Park) in the bottom of the third.
Senior
Shane Siebler (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) plated the Knights fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Giakas made it a 5-2 game with a solo blast in the fifth.
Redshirt junior
Logan Frati (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport/South Manor) started slowly, but settled in and dominated over his final three innings as he retired the Pioneers in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh. He did not factor in the decision, but finished with a final line of two runs, two hits and three walks allowed over seven innings. He recorded 10 strikeouts, his fourth double-digit strikeout game this season.
The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and then plated the tying run in the top of the ninth against Sprague, who was making his first pitching appearance of the season.
FDU had two runners reach in the bottom of the ninth, but the Knights were unable to push across a run.
After Sprague pitched a scoreless 10
th, senior
Jose DeLeon (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) walked with one out in the bottom of the frame. After DeLeon stole second, Roman lifted his fourth home run of the season to send the Knights home with the victory.
Sprague picked up his first career victory by pitching the final two innings. Baylor Sundhal took the loss for Sacred Heart.
Giakas finished the day three-for-three at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored. His home runs were his eighth and ninth of the season.
Sprague's home run was his fifth.
The Knights will return to action next weekend against NEC foe Wagner. The teams will play a four game series over April 29, April 30 and May 1.
