Baseball Edges Wagner in Series Finale, 6-1

TRENTON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team (20-19, 12-3 NEC) secured the series win on Sunday afternoon by defeating Wagner (10-17, 7-8 NEC) 6-1. The Knights took two out of the three games from the Seahawks over the weekend.

How it happened

  • FDU opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. Hunter D'Amato scored off an RBI double to right field by Tom Ruscitti, followed by Luke Cantwell's two-RBI double down the first baseline, allowing Ruscitti and George Rosales to score.
  • An error by the shortstop allowed Tommy Verga to reach base, and Ruscitti scored in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • Wagner responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough to catch up to FDU.
  • Cantwell blasted a two-run home run, driving in Ruscitti to finish the game with six runs and ten safe hits.

Quote from Head Coach Rob DiToma

"I can't say enough about the resiliency of our team. Friday was a hard-fought battle where we came from behind in the ninth, and after Wagner did a great job of shutting down our offense yesterday, it was very important for our offense to have some great at-bats today early.  And we did.  And Joey Kosowsky was absolutely amazing on the mound today. He commanded the game from the second inning on. It was a great team effort, top to bottom. Very proud of the effort."

Inside the box

  • Kosowsky earned his fifth win by going 7.0 innings, striking out five, and allowing only one run.
  • Ruscitti went 3-5 with three runs, one RBI, and a double.
  • Cantwell finished 2-4 with four RBIs, a run, a double, and a home run.
