BRONX, N.Y. –Stephan Jiggetts amassed a triple-double and
Darian Anderson poured in a game-high 28 points as the Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team rolled to a 90-72 victory over Lipscomb University at day two of the Johnny Bach Classic at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
Jiggetts filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the win. The assist and rebound totals were both career-highs for the third-year guard, who became the first Knight according to the school record book to accomplish the rare feat of a triple-double.* Jiggetts is the first NEC player to tally double figures in three different categories since Quinnipiac's James Feldeine did it against Monmouth back on February 25, 2010.
On Jiggetts' remarkable night head coach
Greg Herenda said, "That was the
Stephan Jiggetts we need him to be. He worked so hard this summer and he got what he deserved with his triple-double. That was an incredible performance."
Four of the Knights five starters scored in double figures including
Mike Holloway's 22-point, eight-rebound effort.
The Knights (2-2) shot a red-hot 19-of-24 (79.2%) from the floor in the second half, totaling 58 points, which is the most the team has scored in a half since it amassed 64 two seasons ago against Princeton.
Following the victory, Herenda was proud of his team's second-half performance, "That second half was a glimpse of what our team can become this year. It started with Darian coming back from a tough injury last night and then it spread like wildfire."
A game-changing 20-5 run by the Knights to open the second half allowed them to overtake the Bisons (2-3) and pull away with the victory.
Lipscomb also saw four players score in double figures, topped by Garrison Mathews and George Brammeier, who each tallied 13 in the loss.
Holloway and
Darnell Edge accounted for 11 of the Knights' first 13 points. Edge tossed in a putback on a fastbreak and then nailed a corner three to give the Knights their first lead 13-8 eight minutes into the game. The sophomore guard finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals on the night.
The Knights' defense held the Bisons to a 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) start as they overcame an early 8-4 deficit.
Lipscomb took back the lead, 26,18, with eleven straight points, highlighted by a pair of treys from Nathan Moran before Holloway stopped the bleeding with a bucket inside.
The Knights outscored the Bisons 14-7 over the final five minutes and trailed by one, 33-32 at the break. Holloway paced the Knights with 10 points and five rebounds at the break, while
Darnell Edge chipped in seven and
Stephan Jiggetts added four points and six rebounds.
The first half stats were nearly identical. Fairleigh Dickinson shot 11-for-32 (35.5%), Lipscomb 11-of-32 (34.4%) and the Knights held a slim 33-32 edge on the glass. The difference was Lipscomb's success from three-point range -- the Bisons knocked down seven of their 19 attempts from long range compared to just 2-of-7 by the Knights.
Junior guard Aaron Korn led the Bisons into the halftime locker room with 10 points, including the aforementioned two three-pointers. Seven of the Bisons' 11-made baskets in the first half came from behind the arc.
Anderson opened the second half with a driving layup, which immediately put the Knights in front. Anderson's bucket ignited the offense as the Knights surged out to an 11-2 spurt as they pushed the tempo from end-to-end, stretching the lead to 43-35 with 17:18 to go.
After a slow start, Anderson found the touch as he netted seven points to spur the run out to 20-5 as the Knights extended their cushion to 52-38. The junior guard did most of his damage in the second half tallying 23 of his game-high total in the latter stanza.
The Knights continued to find success with their up-tempo play as they maintained their double-digit lead eventually building it as large as 21 points before the final horn sounded.
"Now we have the quickest turnaround in my coaching career. We are still in the locker room at 8 p.m. and we turn around and play a really tough and well-coached Saint Peter's team tomorrow. It will be here before you know it."
Fairleigh Dickinson closes out the Johnny Bach Classic tomorrow against Saint Peter's University. Start time is set for 1 p.m. at Rose Hill Gymnasium.
