M. Tennis Looks to Slow NJIT

TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team will look to rebound from a tough loss earlier this week when it hosts NJIT for an 11 a.m. on Saturday at the FDU Tennis Courts.

The Knights saw their three-match win streak come to an end on Tuesday when they fell on the road to Army, 4-3. Sophomore Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) ran his win streak to six at No. 1 singles after his doubles partner, senior Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House), and he won at No. 1 doubles for the seventh consecutive time. Also senior Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) has won four singles matches in a row, both at No. 5 and No. 6.

NJIT (14-3) is having a great season and has won five straight after defeating Villanova last time out, 4-3. One of its losses was a 4-3 loss at Army back in late February. The Highlanders have also defeated Sacred Heart and Saint Peter's, two teams FDU has handled already this season.

Last season, FDU squeaked out a 4-3 victory over NJIT in Newark, N.J. The Highlanders won the doubles' point after taking two of the three matches before the Knights won four of the six singles matches to claim the victory.

After its match with NJIT, FDU will host Monmouth for its final Northeast Conference contest and final home match of the season on Wednesday, April 10 at 3 p.m. Shams, Skvarka, Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) will be honored with senior day festivities before the match.
