BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team ran its winning streak to four matches after claiming its second consecutive 4-3 victory, this time on the road over Binghamton on Wednesday. With the victory, the Knights improve to 6-5 on the season, while the Bears fall to 3-12 overall.
The doubles matches set the tone for the entire match, as FDU won two of the three highly-contested matches to claim the doubles' point and take an early 1-0 lead, as all three matches were decided by two games.
The No. 1 duo of current and reigning Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Weeks, senior
Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) and freshman
Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park), needed an extra game to defeat Agatha Ambrozy and Katherine Medianik, 9-7. Also winning by the same score was senior
Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) and freshman
Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg) at No. 2 over Shea Brodsky and Alexis Tashiro. Sophomore
Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) and junior
Manuela Leme (Varginha, Brazil/E.E. Antania Alves Cruz) lost a tough match at No. 3, 8-6, to Missy Edelblum and Sarah Kohtz.
In singles, Binghamton won the first three matches, at No. 2, 3 and 4, to take a 3-1 lead in the match before the Knights came storming back. Rapoport got things going with a nice three-set victory over Medianik, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, while Guzairova and Leme each won in straight sets at No. 5 and 6 to clinch the match for FDU.
“After barely coming away with the doubles' point and then losing to the first three singles matches to be completed, the team rallied by winning all of the remaining matches,” Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. “We showed that when we do not play our best tennis we are still able to find a way to complete and win. We really persevered today and it made for a good win.”
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, April 9 when they host Saint Peter's for a 3 p.m. nonconference tilt at the FDU Tennis Courts.
