WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team won its second-straight Northeast Conference Championship title Sunday, as the Knights defeated No. 2 seed Quinnipiac, 4-3, at the Mercer County Tennis Center. With the victory, FDU improves to 11-6 on the season and will advance to the NCAA Tournament, while the Bobcats conclude the year with an overall record of 12-9.

In a rematch of last year's championship, FDU won the doubles' point, and saw Quinnipiac rally back to win three singles matches, before the Knights clinched the win. It is the second time this season that FDU has beaten the Bobcats, both times by a score of 4-3.

The match was dramatically close right from the start. As it would be for the match, the doubles' point came down to the final match of the day. In the No.1 doubles spot, senior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) and freshman Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) took an early 4-1 lead over Rachel Cantor and Sarah Viebrock. The Quinnipiac duo eventually rallied to make it 6-5, FDU, but Rapoport and Chis held serve and then broke the Bobcats, to take an 8-5 win.

Quinnipiac answered with a win in the No.2 spot however, where Jacqueline Raynor and Michelle Dassa beat senior Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) and freshman Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg), 8-4. With the top two matches split, the doubles point came down to the No.3 spot, where sophomore Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) and junior Manuela Leme (Varginha, Brazil/E.E. Antania Alves Cruz) were battling it out with Mary Chup and Ariana Launie. The Knights took an early 6-2 lead, before Quinnipiac again rallied back. The Bobcats rallied back from being down 7-4, to make it 7-6 in favor of FDU. And Guzairova and Leme held serve, winning the match, 8-6, and giving the Knights the doubles' point in dramatic fashion. FDU headed into the singles matches with a 1-0 advantage, which would prove to be the difference in the match.

Singles was just as back and forth as the doubles' point had been. The Knights took a 2-0 lead early on, when Rapoport beat Cantor in the No.1 singles spot, 6-2, 6-0. But as would be the case for the rest of the afternoon, Quinnipiac answered the point with one of its own. Raynor got the Bobcats on the board in the No.2 singles spot, as she beat Morina, 6-4, 6-1. Soon after, Quinnipiac would tie the score at 2-2, with a win in the No.3 singles spot. There, Viebrock beat Chis, 6-4, 6-3 to even the match.

FDU would take the lead once more when Guzairova beat Chupa, 6-2, 6-4 in the No.5 singles spot, going up 3-2, and needing just one more point to clinch the championship. The Bobcats weren't done fighting however. Launie evened the score with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Leme in the No.6 singles spot, and the two teams were tied, 3-3.

The championship came down to the No.4 singles match, where Maier was battling with Dassa. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Maier rallied back to win the second set, 6-2. With the match tied at that point, all eyes were on the pair as they took to the court for a third set. There, Maier held strong, and took the match and the championship for the Knights, with a 6-3 win in set three.

With Maier's win, the Knights won their second-straight Northeast Conference championship, 4-3, and earn the NEC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The first round of the NCAA tournament will take place May 10-13, with opponents and location to be announced.
