FDU vs. SHU Results
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The No. 2 seed Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team had no trouble in its Northeast Conference Tournament quarterfinal match, defeating No. 7 seed Sacred Heart, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center. With the victory, the Knights improve to 7-7 on the season, while the Pioneers end the year with an overall record of 6-13.
FDU will play No. 3 seed Quinnipiac sometime after 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in a semifinal match. The Knights defeated the Bobcats, 4-3, on March 30.
FDU took an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles' point. Seniors
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and
Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) were the first to finish, defeating Luka Bagi and Jeremy Shuskus at No. 2, 8-2. Clinching the doubles' point for the Knights was senior
Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) and freshman
Julien Philippe (Paris, France/Saint Honoré d’Eylau), who won at No. 3 over Brian Power and Justin Pagan, 8-3.
In singles, FDU won three matches to take the victory and advance to Saturday's semifinal round. Sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 over James Barnhart, while senior
Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) was unchallenged at No. 2 in his 6-1, 6-0 victory against Pagan. Skvarka then gave FDU the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Kevin Budrawich.
