TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's team concluded the 2013 home portion of the schedule with a 7-0 sweep over Northeast Conference rival Monmouth, 7-0, Wednesday on Senior Day at the FDU Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Knights conclude NEC play and move to .500 with a record of 6-6 (4-1 NEC) on the season, while the Hawks fall to 6-6 (2-3 NEC) overall.
FDU got off to a quick start after sweeping all three doubles matches. The Knights outscored Monmouth, 24-6, en route to taking the doubles' point for an early 1-0 lead.
At No. 1, sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior Ibraham Shams took care of Freddy Marcinkowski and Ramy Bekihet, 8-3. Seniors
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and
Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) dominated at No. 2 with an 8-1 victory over Jason Prezant and Jason Rothstein, while senior
Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) and freshman
Julien Philippe (Paris, France/Saint Honoré d’Eylau) had no problem in their 8-2 triumph over Eric Pierce and Joe Talafous at No. 3.
In singles action, FDU won all six matches in straight sets, as it won the 12 sets by a combined score of 72-17.
Berzins won at No. 1 over Marcinkowski, 6-1, 6-1, while Shams was victorious over Bekihet at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3, Gricheno won the first set over Preznat, 6-4, before posting a 6-0 shutout in the second set. Hemy was never challenged at No. 4 in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pierce, and Skvarka defeated Rothstein, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5. Rounding out the scoring for the Knights was freshman
Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Talafous.

FDU will return to action Tuesday, April 16 when it concludes the regular season with a road match against Division II power Concordia at 12 p.m.
