NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team concluded the Yale Round Robin with a 5-2 loss to Marist on Sunday. With the victory, the Red Foxes improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-4 overall and conclude the event with a record of 1-2.
FDU started the day on the right foot, as it earned the doubles' point to take an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior
Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) won at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, over Lorenzo Rossi and Will Reznek, while the senior duo of
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and
Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) cruised to an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles over Dalen Klassen and Billy Bishop.
In singles action, the Knights were only victorious at No. 1, as Berzins won in straight sets over Trym Nagelstad, 6-4, 6-1. FDU lost in straight sets in the five other singles matches.
Earlier in the day, the Knights concluded their match with Stony Brook and took the doubles' point to finish the match with a 6-1 victory. All three matches were close, but Berzins and Shams won at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Hemy and Skvarka needed a tiebreaker at No. 2 to win 8-7 (5), and senior
Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) and freshman
Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory at No. 3.
FDU will have three weeks off before returning to action with its first home match of the spring season, as it takes on Saint Francis University in Northeast Conference action on Sunday, March 24. First serve at the FDU Tennis Courts is scheduled for 10 a.m.
