FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team picked up its second-consecutive Northeast Conference sweep Wednesday with a 7-0 victory over Sacred Heart. With the victory, the Knights improve to 4-4 (2-1 NEC) on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 3-8 (2-1 NEC) overall.
FDU was victorious in all three doubles matches and took an early 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles' point. Sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior
Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) cruised at No. 1 over James Barnhart and Mike Provezano, 8-2.
The senior duo of
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and
Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) won a tightly-contest match over Brian Power and Jeremy Shuskus, 8-6, at No. 2, and in a tiebreaker, senior
Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) and freshman
Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) won 8-7 (7-5) at No. 3 over Luke Bogi and Justin Pagan.
In singles action, the Knights won all six matches, with five coming in straight sets. At No. 1, Berzins won with no problem over Justin Pagan, 6-1, 6-1. Shams also cruised, winning at No. 2 over Barnhart, 6-3, 6-1.
At No. 3, Gricheno won in three sets over Matt Dean, 6-4, 5-7, 10-3. Hemy had a close first set, winning 7-5, before cruising to a 6-1 victory in the second set for the victory at No. 4 over Brian Power. Sjoberg and Skvarka were straight set winners at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, defeating John Lopresti (6-3, 6-4) and Jeremy Shuskus (6-1, 6-1).
“Overall, we played well today,” Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. “There is still work we need to do in the coming weeks to reach our potential, but we are certainly on a path to get there.”
FDU will return to action on Saturday, March 30 when it travels to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac in NEC play. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
