W. Tennis Sweeps Weekly NEC Awards

Full Release

SOMERSET, N.J. -- Two Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis standouts swept the Northeast Conference women's tennis weekly accolades, announced by the league on Tuesday. Senior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) was named NEC Player of the Week, while freshman Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) was named NEC Rookie of the Week.

While Rapoport delivered a dominating performance in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Saint Francis University's Rafaella Panizza on Sunday, her most impressive effort may have come a day earlier in a setback to Harvard's Hideko Tachibana. Tachibana, a former Ivy League Rookie of the Year and All-Ivy first teamer a year ago, raced out to a 6-2 first set victory in their No. 1 flight match, but Rapoport roared back with a 6-4 win in the second set. Tachibana outlasted the 2011-12 NEC Player of the Year in the decisive third set, winning by a 10-7 margin. Rapoport also teamed up with Chis for an 8-2 win against SFU and an 8-5 triumph versus Harvard. The Moscow, Russia native is a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles in NEC play this season.

Chis, a two-time NEC Rookie of the Month, now adds a weekly honor to her burgeoning body of work. In her first match of the spring since recovering from an injury, Chis came up short at No. 5 singles versus Harvard, but came back strong the following afternoon, posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Saint Francis University's Dani Gryckiewicz to run her singles record to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in NEC play. She also collected a pair of doubles victories along with partner Rapoport to improve her season mark to 8-3, 2-0 NEC.
