W. Tennis Snaps Skid, Defeats SFU, 6-1

TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team got in the win column in its 2013 spring home opener with a 6-1 victory over Saint Francis University in Northeast Conference action Sunday afternoon at the FDU Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Knights improve to 3-5 (2-0 NEC) on the season, while the Red Flash falls to 7-7 (1-2 NEC) overall.

FDU started out well in the doubles matches, taking all three en route to outscoring SFU, 24-4. Senior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) and freshman Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) won at No. 1, 8-2, over Rafaella Panizza and Alex Sachs. Also winning by a score of 8-2 was senior Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) and freshman Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg), who defeated Shivani Patel and Lucy Jasso at No. 2. Completing the sweep in doubles was sophomore Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) and junior Manuela Leme (Varginha, Brazil/E.E. Antania Alves Cruz), who posted an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 over Dani Gryckiewicz and Camila Diaz, 8-0.

In singles the Knights won five of the six matches. Raporport did not lose a game, as she dominated at No. 1, 6-0, 6-0, over Panizza. Morina cruised at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Shivani Patel. Maier needed three sets to defeat Lucy Jasso at No. 3, 6-2, 2-6, 10-6. 

Rounding out the victories for FDU was Chis at No. 5, who won 6-1, 6-1 over Gryckiewicz, and Leme, who had no problems at No. 6, as she defeated Diaz, 6-2, 6-0.

"It was a great team effort by our team coming off the loss to Harvard yesterday and kicking off our outdoor season today with a good conference win," Head Coach Jonathan Buchman said.

The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, March 27 when it travels to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart in NEC play at 3 p.m.
