NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team rebounded Saturday night by taking five of six singles matches against Stony Brook at the Yale Round Robin. The two sides will play Sunday morning at 10 a.m. to complete the doubles' point, but the Knights have clinched the victory in the match because of their performance in singles. With the victory, FDU improves to 2-3 on the season, while the Seawolves fall to 0-3 overall.
Sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) picked up his team-leading eighth victory of the season in a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Rick Timmerman at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 singles, senior
Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) needed three sets to defeat Mons Knudtzon, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Winning in straight sets for the Knights were senior
Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2, freshman
Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0 and senior
Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) at No. 6, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) fell in straight sets at No. 4 singles to Jose Morales, 6-4, 6-3.
“My guys came out really hungry and competed as hard as I have seen so far this season,” Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. “This was a good team win, and hopefully, we will take this momentum into tomorrow's match against a good Marist team.”
After finishing out the doubles' point with Stony Brook, FDU will face Marist at the Yale Round Robin.
