NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team was defeated by No. 49 Yale, 6-1, Saturday morning at the Yale Round Robin. With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Knights fall to 1-3 overall.
FDU picked up its lone point of the day at No. 6 singles, as senior
Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) dropped Kyle Dawson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Yale took an early 1-0, winning the doubles' point. John Huang and Patrick chase defeated Skvarka and senior
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School), 8-2, at No. 2 doubles, while Zachary Dean and Matt Saiontz won at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, over senior
Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) and freshman
Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium). The Knights' No. 1 duo of sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior
Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) were trailing 6-5 when the doubles' point was clinched.
In singles play, the Bulldogs were straight-set winners in slots 1-5.
“We competed well against a strong Yale team,” Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. “Today was another part of our process to see where we are and what we need to improve on. We still have a lot of work to do, but we have a good foundation to work from.”
FDU will continue play later today with a 6 p.m. match against Stony Brook in the Yale Round Robin. The two sides will play only singles before playing doubles at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
