JERSEY CITY, N.J. – For the second time in as many seasons, the Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team defeated Saint Peter's, 7-0, by winning all three doubles matches and sweeping the six singles matches, accomplishing the feat Sunday afternoon for the Knights' first win of the season.

"We played solidly today and did what we needed," Head Coach Jonathan Buchman said.

The Knights (1-2) got off to a hot start thanks to strong play in doubles by taking all three matches from the Peacocks (1-7). The No. 1 pairing of sophomore Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) were 8-2 winners over the Peacocks' Carlos Carrera and Alex Frakes. FDU's other two pairings of seniors Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) and Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) at No. 2 and senior Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) and freshman Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) at No. 3 won their doubles matches by scores of 8-7 and 8-1, respectively.

FDU was able to keep the momentum going with victories in all six singles matches. Playing No. 1 singles, Berzins picked up his team-leading seventh victory of the season over Carrera, 6-2, 6-2.

Shams dropped the first set in his No. 2 singles match to Frakes, 6-3, but bounced back to finish up, 6-1, 10-4.

In the rest of the singles matches, Gricheno took down Marko Knezevic, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3, Hemy was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 4 in his match against Luccas Coutinho and Sjoberg earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against Oliver Bellomi. Skvarka was also awarded the win at No. 6 by default.

Next on the schedule for FDU is the Yale Round Robin March 2-3 in New Haven, Conn. The Knights will face Yale, Marist and Stony Brook in the two-day event.
