WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team dropped Sunday's nonconference match to UMass, 7-0, at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Minutewomen won all three doubles matches and followed up by sweeping the singles matches to improve to 6-1, as FDU slides to 2-3 on the season.
FDU, which dropped to 0-3 in the spring following a 2-0 mark in the fall, played its most competitive doubles match at the No. 2 slot. Senior
Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) and sophomore
Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) fell just short against UMass' Arielle Griffin and Jessica Podlofsky, 8-5.
With the momentum in their favor and a 1-0 lead, the Minutewomen were straight-set winners in five of the six singles matches on the day. Senior
Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo)'s No. 2 singles match against Podlofsky went to a third-set tiebreaker before Morina suffered the defeat. FDU's captain won the first set, 6-4, but fell 7-5, 11-9 the rest of the way.
"We were outcoached in the doubles and never got energized to the level we needed to in singles in order to compete against a very good UMass team,” Head Coach
Jonathan Buchman said. “That is my fault as coach, and I take full responsibility for this match."
Buchman's Knights are back at it on Saturday, March 2, with a 3 p.m. match against Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y.
