Results

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Army on Saturday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center to fall to 2-2 on the season, as the Black Knights improved to 4-0.

In the early going, FDU dug itself a 1-0 hole when Army claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3. The Knights' No. 1 doubles pairing of senior Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) and freshman Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg) secured their third win of the season, taking down Della and Elle Taylor, 8-7(4), but it was not enough as the Black Knights took the 1-0 advantage.

For the second match in a row, Maier (No. 3) and sophomore Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) (No. 4) were victorious in their singles matches. Maier picked up her eighth win in a row to improve to 9-2 during her rookie campaign thanks to a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win over Margaret Iliev.

Also adding her ninth win of the season, Guzairova got the better of Elle Taylor, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) for the Knights' second point of the day.

At No. 2 singles, Morina battled to the end before Army's Eva Sung squeaked out a 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 win.

The Black Knights added straight-set victories at No. 1, 5 and 6 singles to win the match by a 5-2 margin.

“The team played a hard-fought match today.” Head Coach Jonathan Buchman said. “We had a good chance to win the doubles point and the No. 1 and 2 singles matches. There are a lot of bright spots on this team right now and all the pieces, including the return of Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park), are about to come together. I am excited to be coaching this team of women.”

The Knights have a quick turnaround time with a match against UMass tomorrow in West Point, N.Y. at 10 a.m.
