W. Tennis Looks for Pair of Wins at West Point

TEANECK, N.J. – Looking for the first win of the spring season, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team will face two tests this weekend at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. with a match against Army on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. and another on Sunday, Feb. 17, against UMass at 10 a.m.

FDU (2-1) defeated Monmouth and Seton Hall in dual matches in the fall, but dropped a 5-2 decision to Rutgers their first time out this spring on Feb. 13. Despite the loss to the Scarlet Knights, senior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) and sophomore Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) came away with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. In singles, freshman Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg) was a winner in the third-set tiebreaker of her No. 3 singles match, while Guzairova won in straight sets at No. 4.

The last time the Knights faced Army (3-0) was last spring, with FDU getting the better of the play in a 4-3 win. The Knights took the doubles point, and singles wins from Rapoport (No. 1), Irina Dementyeva (Moscow, Russia/W 91) (No. 4) and Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) (No. 5) secured the victory.

Army's three wins on the season have come against Binghamton (6-1), Sacred Heart (4-3) and Seton Hall (5-2), a team FDU beat 4-3 in the fall. For the Black Knights, freshman Gabriella Spindler has accumulated the most wins with 12 and played No. 5 singles during their last match against Seton Hall. Army's No. 1 singles player, Erin Colton is 1-1 this spring and 4-4 on the season.

The Knights other weekend opponent, UMass, was the Atlantic-10 runner-up last season. The Minutewomen (3-1) went 2-0 in the fall with road wins over Providence and UConn and have gone 1-1 so far this spring by falling to Brown and beating Saint Joseph's.

Sunday will be the third meeting between the two squads since 2009. UMass defeated FDU 5-2 in 2011 and 6-1 in 2009.

UMass' Jocelyn Providence has seven singles wins on the season to lead the team and Yuliana Motyl and Chantal Swiszcz also have seven wins in doubles at No. 1.

Following the weekend matches, FDU will have nearly two weeks away from competition before gearing up for a match at Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday, March 2 at 3 p.m.
