FDU Athletes Honored at NJAIAW Luncheon

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University athletic department was well represented at the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women's 2012 National Girls and Women in Sports Day Luncheon hosted by Seton Hall University.

The luncheon celebrates the outstanding achievements of college and high school female student-athletes.

Women's bowler, Danielle McEwan (Stony Point, NY/Stony Point) was honored as the FDU recipient of the Woman of the Year Award.

McEwan will graduate as one of the most decorated athletes in FDU history.  The senior from Stony Point, N.Y. is a two-time Northeast Conference Player of the Year and was the 2011-12 Division I National Player of the Year.  She led the Knights to the 2010 NCAA National Championship as a freshman and has served as the anchor for the Knights for three years.

In November, McEwan represented the United States at the QubicaAMF World Cup in Poland and recently won the Team USA Trials tournament for the second consecutive year.

Off the lanes, McEwan has earned a 3.74 grade point average as psychology major with a concentration in education, while competing at the highest level.

The women's bowling team and women's tennis teams were also honored for their academic achievements.  Both teams held the highest team grade point average of any team competing at a four-year college in the state of New Jersey for their respective seasons.

The women's bowling team GPA of 3.587 and women's tennis GPA of 3.42 were especially remarkable considering both teams' athletic success during the 2011-12 season.  The women's bowling team finished the season as NCAA runners-up after falling to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the National Championship game, while the women's tennis team fell to Virginia in the first round of the NCAA tournament after being crowed Northeast Conference Champions.

Director of Athletics David Langford and Senior Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women's Administrator Deb Solfaro were in attendance to honor the student-athletes at the 21st annual luncheon.  Women's tennis Head Coach Jonathan Buchman and team captain Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) accepted the women's tennis team's award.  McEwan's mother, Susan Varano, represented the women's bowling team as they could not be in attendance due to the 2012-13 competition schedule.
