FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team concluded day two of the USTA NTC Invitational on Saturday. The Knights saw success in singles and doubles action on the day, as three singles players are moving on to tomorrow's final and one doubles team is still in contention.
It will be an all-FDU final in Flight H as junior
Dominic Devaux-Lovell (St. Lucia, West Indies/Heritage Delray Beach) and sophomore
Julien Philippe (Paris, France/Saint Honoré d’Eylau) both earned victories in their semifinal matches. Devaux-Lovell took down Mark Lemann of Columbia, 6-4, 6-4, and Philippe beat Sacred Heart's Matt Dean by a score of 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.
After a 2-0 first day, senior
Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim) reserved his spot in the Flight D final when his semifinal opponent withdrew.
Gricheno is also vying for the Flight C doubles title alongside fellow senior
Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho). FDU's duo defeated Dartmouth's Christopher Kipouras and Samuel Todd, 8-4, in Saturday's semifinals. Earlier, Gricheno and Skvarka took down Sam Jang-Milsten and David Proctor from Army, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. The duo will square off with Princeton's Jonathon Carcione and Matt Siow in tomorrow's final.
FDU picked up consolation round singles wins from
Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium), 6-4, 6-0, against Benjamin Quazzo of Princeton in Flight E and
Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School), who beat Amry's David Proctor, 6-2, 6-1, in Flight G.
In consolation doubles, the combination of sophomore
Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) and senior
Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) scored Flight A wins over James Barnhart and Kevin Budrawich from Sacred Heart, 8-2, and SMU's Evan Bechtel and Arthurs Kasijevs, 8-3. Hemy and freshman
Markus Sjoberg (Tyreso, Sweden/Varmdo Gymnasium) beat Srikar Ala and Max Peara from Fordham, 8-6, in Flight B.
