W. Tennis Shines in Day One at Stony Brook Classic

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team opened the 2012-13 season in style with a perfect 6-0 record in singles play during day one of the Stony Brook Classic on Friday.

The Knights won two matches in Flight A and C to go with single victories in Flight B and D on the day.  

Senior Anna Rapoport (Moscow, Russia/#1239 ) defeated Colgate's Alex Petrini, 8-4, in Flight A action. She will take on Army's Jamila Paul tomorrow.

Also in the top flight, freshman Celine Maier (Nuremberg, Germany /Bertolt-Brecht-Schule Nuremberg) took down LIU Brooklyn's Sanne Flowers, 8-6, in her first match for FDU. Her second round opponent will be Stony Brook's Nini Lagvilava.

Sophomore Dina Guzairova (Sochi, Russia/Chelyabinsk #8 ) is moving onto day two of Flight B singles after her 8-4 win against Army's Carolyn Pitman on Friday. She will do battle with Becky Shtilkind from Stony Brook tomorrow. 

In Flight C, senior Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) beat Stony Brook's Lousie Badoche, 8-4, and freshman Nicole Chis (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) defeated Bryant's Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic, 8-1. Morina's next opponent is Gabby Winter of Navy, and Chis will face Logan Antill, also of Navy.

Junior Manuela Leme (Varginha, Brazil/E.E. Antania Alves Cruz) had no problem in her Flight D match against Rhode Island's Kristin Bertsch, winning 8-0, as she is set to square off with Marist's Lisa Ventimiglia.

In a Flight E match that was supspended due to darkness but will be completed in the morning, sophomore Gabriela Sarrate (Union City, NJ/Union City) is leading Bryant's Mariah Korne, 2-1.
