Fairleigh Dickinson University women's bowling head coach Mike LoPresti, who guided the Knights to National Championship victories in 2006 and 2010, has announced the signing of newcomer Michelle Hunzaker (Cary, NC).
Hunzaker was an honor roll student at Green Hope High School in Cary, North Carolina and plans to major in communications at FDU. She was a founding member of her high school bowling team. As an anchor for all four years, she led the Falcons to a State Championship in 2008-09 and three County Championships (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09).
Hunzaker averaged over 200 in her final season in the county (203), posting a 190 county average in her junior year and a 182 average her sophomore season. Her highest game is a 279 and her highest series is a 718.
At the Pepsi Championships, she was State Runner-Up in 2007 and 2010 and State Finalist all four years. Hunzaker posted a top-32 finish in 2008 and 2009 at the Teen Masters.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I ever believe I would have this type of opportunity," said Hunzaker. "I am still somewhat stunned this is actually happening, but getting more and more excited everyday about the possibility of contributing to the team's run for back to back national titles."
"Michelle is an intelligent young lady who loves to compete and be part of a team," said LoPresti. "She is an honor student and an accomplished player who has the type of game that will thrive during NCAA competitions. Her strong work ethic and the experience she has gained while competing in high school competitions and junior national tournaments should make her a valuable player on our team. We see her as the complete student-athlete, and we are extremely pleased she signed with us."
The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's bowling team defeated Nebraska in seven games at Carolier Lanes on April 10 to win the program's second NCAA Championship.
