Women's Tennis Falls to Long Island in NEC Championship Title Match, 4-2

The top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team's season came to an end this afternoon as they were defeated by defending conference champion Long Island, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in the finals of the Northeast Conference Tournament at the Mercer County Tennis Courts in West Windsor, NJ. 

 

In number one singles, senior Julija Korshunova (Riga, Latvia/Secondary School #75) was defeated by Selma Babic, 6-2, 6-1.  Sophomore Elmine Botes (Heidelberg Gauteng, Rep. of South Africa/Hoer Volkskool and British International Distance College) did not finish versus Linn Sjogren in number two singles.  She won the first set, 6-2, lost the second set, 7-6, and was down, 3-2, in the third when the match was stopped.  Sophomore Julia Prantl (Benediktbeuern, Germany/GUS-Gymnasium Bad Tolz) lost in number three singles to Aleksandra Pavlovic, 6-4, 6-3.  In number four singles, freshman Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) defeated Taysha Blessington, 6-3, 6-2.  Senior Ksenia Chernyshova (Moscow, Russia/Secondary School Korolev) defeated H'Ann Johnson in number five singles, 6-4, 6-4.  Senior Jessica DeCarlos (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) was defeated by Stephanie Elie in number six singles, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).

In number one doubles action, Botes and Korshunova were defeated by Babic and Pavlovic, 9-7.  The tandem of Prantl and Morina won, 8-6, in number two doubles over Blessington and Johnson.  Chernyshova and DeCarlos lost in number three doubles to Elie and Dara Lahens, 8-5.

"It was a tough ending to one of the best seasons in FDU history," said Head Coach Ira Miller.  "We still have a young team and will have a great nucleus coming back.  Congratulations to our seniors, Julija Korshunova (Riga, Latvia/Secondary School #75), Ksenia Chernyshova (Moscow, Russia/Secondary School Korolev) and Jessica DeCarlos (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional).  They had a great year and were the foundation of our team."
