The top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team took care of business Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of Northeast Conference Tournament at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. The Knights defeated seventh-seed Robert Morris, 4-0. Once the Knights clinched the victory all on-going matches were stopped. The Knights have now won nine dual matches in a row and 12 of their last 13.
In number one singles, senior Julija Korshunova (Riga, Latvia/Secondary School #75) did not finish versus Samantha Alves. The match was tied at five in the first set when the match was stopped. Sophomore Elmine Botes (Heidelberg Gauteng, Rep. of South Africa/Hoer Volkskool and British International Distance College) did not finish versus Clarissa Chen in number two singles. She won the first set, 6-1, and was up, 4-0, in the second set when the match was stopped. Sophomore Julia Prantl (Benediktbeuern, Germany/GUS-Gymnasium Bad Tolz) did not finish versus Isabella Novella in number three singles. She won the first set, 6-3, and was up, 2-0 in the second set when the match was stopped. In number four singles, freshman Egzona Morina (Prishtina, Kosovo/American School of Kosovo) defeated Tiffany Meinert, 6-0, 6-1. Senior Ksenia Chernyshova (Moscow, Russia/Secondary School Korolev) defeated Ekaterina Rudneva in number five singles, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Jessica DeCarlos (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) defeated Sara Meier in number six singles, 6-1, 6-0.
In number one doubles action, Botes and Korshunova defeated Chen and Novella, 8-1. The tandem of Prantl and Morina did not finish in number two doubles versus Alves and Meinert. They were leading, 6-3, when the match was stopped. Chernyshova and DeCarlos won in number three doubles over Rudneva and Meier, 8-1.
"Ksenia and Jessica really stepped up today as captains," said Head Coach Ira Miller. "We are looking forward to playing Sacred Heart tomorrow morning."
The Knights return to action tomorrow morning, April 17, as they will take on fourth-seeded Sacred Heart in the semifinals. First serve is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
