Men's Tennis Squeaks by Lehigh, 4-3, to Open Up Spring Season

The Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team opened up its spring season today with a 4-3 victory over Lehigh in Bethlehem, PA.  The Knights are 1-0 on the young season.

 

In number one singles, sophomore Dom Hemy lost, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, to Troy List.  Freshman Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) defeated Leland Richardson in number two singles, 6-2, 6-2.  Freshman Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim), playing his first collegiate match, won in number three singles, defeating Collin Laffey, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.  In number four singles, freshman Sven Sjoerds (Gendt, Netherlands/Over Betuwe College Bemmel) defeated Matt Savarn, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.  Sophomore Andrew Denny (Bingley, England/Bradford Grammar) defeated Ryan Krueger in number five singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.  Freshman Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) lost in number six singles, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-7, to Andrew Krentz.

In number one doubles action, Skvarka and sophomore Marco Jemersic (Zagreb, Croatia/X Gimnazija Ivan Supek) lost to List and Laffey, 8-6.  The tandem of Sjoerds and Denny lost, 8-6, in number two doubles, to Richardson and Savarn.  Dom Hemy and Gricheno won in number three doubles as they defeated Arnaldo Pacheco and Cameron Silbert, 9-7.

“It was a great opening match for the spring,” said Head Coach Ira Miller.  “We fought hard and played well in the big matches.”

The Knights return to action this Friday, February 5, as they travel to Jamaica, NY to take on St. John's at 12:00 p.m.
