Women's Soccer Falls to Momouth

The Monmouth University women's soccer team scored four goals in the first period to defeat host Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-0, in the Knights' final game of the 2009 season on Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

The first three goals for the Hawks (12-4-1, 7-1-1 Northeast Conference), who entered the game second in the league, came in a flurry as they were scored 23 minutes.

Mary Wilks, who finished the game with two goals, scored in the third minute from 23 yards out on an assist from Courtney Snyder. Wilks has nine goals this season, which ties for the league-lead.

In the 15th minute, Andrea Lopez scored her sixth goal of the season off assists from Wilks and Lopez. Wilks scored again nine minutes later.

Jennie Vartebedian scored in the 30th minute to send the Hawks into the break with a 4-0 lead. Shannon Rogers and Amber Agostinelli each scored in the second half to make the final score 6-0.

Jennifer Arceneaux (/Ralston Valley) and Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) each fired off two shots in the second half straight towards the goal to put the Knights on the board, but all four were saved by Lia Fierro, who finished the game with five saves. Megan MacKellar (/Brookwood), in goal for the Knights, also made five saves between the posts.

The Knights end the season with a 2-15-1 overall record and 0-9-1 mark in Northeast Conference play. Arceneaux and Sherman finished the season tied for the team lead with eight points and three goals.

The four graduating seniors were honored in a ceremony prior to kickoff: Arceneaux, Emma Howes (Avalon Beach, Sydney, Australia/Barranjoey), MacKellar and Christine Niven (/Middleboro).

"I'm proud of our seniors," said Head Coach Renee Montana. "All four of them will be missed. Jen came out with her most consistent season this year. Megan fought back to come back from injury and Chrissy was really versatile on the field, giving us a lot of options. Emma was great defensively for us and really acted as a voice of leadership."

"I look forward to the post-season, moving on from this season. We are going to focus on all of the little things that we need to improve on and we will come back stronger."
