Mount Posts 3-1 Win Over Women's Soccer

The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team used a pair of first-half goals to get past Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at University Stadium.

The Knights (2-14-1, 0-8-1 Northeast Conference) were the first to get on the board, as Julie Woolridge (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College) scored on a corner kick from the left side in the 13th minute. The goal was the first of the season for Woolridge and was unassisted.

The Mountaineers (6-10-2, 4-4-1 NEC) knotted the game 12 minutes later as Kelly Baker scored her first goal of the season. Mary McCarron found the feet of Baker, who took the pass and ran down the left sideline, firing the ball into the bottom right corner to tie the game.

Mount St. Mary's took the lead in the 40th minute as Jenna Stern passed the ball off to Emily Menotti, who took it down the center of the box, taking FDU goalkeeper Megan MacKellar (/Brookwood) one-on-one and putting it into the back of the net for the 2-1 advantage.

Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) had chance to tie the match up in the 51st minute, firing a bullet into the right side, but it hit the post and bounced out.  A few minutes later, the Knights were on the offensive again as Christine Niven (/Middleboro) tried to even the score, but her shot was blocked out by a Mount defender.

In the 83rd minute, Baker scored her second goal of the game as she took a pass from Kim Karpinski and dribbled down the field. Finding herself alone, she aimed for the back of the net from five yards out for a 3-1 Mount edge.

Sadie Winship made four saves in goal for the Mountaineers to pick up her first win of the season, while MacKellar grabbed four saves between the posts for the Knights. The Mountaineers outs-shot the Knights, 15-12, while FDU held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

"We played hard and well in a physical game," said Head Coach Renee Montana. "We set up a lot of offensive opportunities, but it just didn't go in for us today. It's tough to play with this much heart and potential and not get the results, but I'm proud of the way the team fought today."

The Knights will wrap up their home season on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1:00 p.m. when they host Monmouth. The four graduating seniors will be honored prior to kickoff: Jennifer Arceneaux (/Ralston Valley), Emma Howes (Avalon Beach, Sydney, Australia/Barranjoey), Megan MacKellar (/Brookwood) and Christine Niven (/Middleboro).
