Women's Tennis Concludes Fall Season

 The Fairleigh Dickinson women's tennis team ended competition today at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships in New Haven, CT.

In the singles main draw, sophomore Elmine Botes (Heidelberg Gauteng, Rep. of South Africa/Hoer Volkskool and British International Distance College) won her first round match, 6-4, 6-2, over Yulia Smirnova from Binghamton.  In the round of 32, she lost to the twelfth seed Stephanie Kent from Yale, 6-3, 6-2.  Senior Julija Korshunova (Riga, Latvia/Secondary School #75) was defeated in the first round, 6-1, 6-2, by the tenth seed CC Sardinha from Syracuse.

In the singles consolation bracket, senior Ksenia Chernyshova (Moscow, Russia/Secondary School Korolev) won her first round match against  Carissa King from Dartmouth, 6-3, 7-5, before losing, 6-1, 6-0, to Christina Tan from Syracuse.  Sophomore Julia Prantl (Benediktbeuern, Germany/GUS-Gymnasium Bad Tolz) also won her first round match, 7-5, 6-4, over Erin McCarthy from Marist.  Prantl was then defeated in the second round by Christina Danosi, 6-0, 6-1.  Senior Jessica DeCarlos (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) was defeated in her first round match, 6-2, 6-1, by Livia Gherman from Albany.

"It was a great tournament to get so many players in and to have Elmine get to the round of 32 in her first ITA Northeast Regional," said head coach Ira Miller.

This tournament concluded the fall season for the women's tennis team.  The team returns to action next spring verses Lehigh University on January 31, 2010.
